CHARON-AXP on Linux

CHARON-AXP on Linux is a member of the CHARON cross-platform hardware virtualization product family. CHARON-AXP creates the virtual replica of the original Alpha Hardware inside a standard 64 bit x86 compatible computer system. It will run the original Alpha binary code, including operating systems OpenVMS and Tru64 UNIX, the layered products, and applications.

CHARON-AXP for Linux is part of the DEC Alpha virtualization product line (CHARONAXP/4100/DS10/DS20/ES40/GS80/GS160/GS320) on a Linux Red Hat Enterprise 6 64 bit and Fedora 14 64 bit hosting platforms. CHARON-AXP provides comparable functionality and performance levels to that of CHARON-AXP for Windows. Product details are readily available on the Stromasys website.

Most of the original Alpha-hardware is virtualized, allowing the OpenVMS or Tru64 operating system and all software that is running in that environment to remain working as always. Very little changes required to the original software (operating system, layered products, or applications), their procedures or handling have to be applied. Tru64 kernel might require a rebuild.

Non-commercial, Educational (NCE) freeware versions of CHARON-AXP on Linux have been made available online for demonstrational purposes in 2010. Stromasys NCE products are continuously updated and are made available for Windows, Linux and VMware platforms with the intention of allowing Stromasys users the ability to evaluate products prior to purchase. To obtain access to NCE freeware, users are simply asked to register. All NCE product versions have been built from current source code.
