CHARON-11
This product is retired as of December 2006 - CHARON-11, the emulator of complete PDP-11 systems
CHARON-11 is a software application running on Windows 2000 Professional or Windows XP Professional emulating a complete PDP-11 hardware configuration. The emulation allows the unmodified binary PDP-11 code (both the PDP-11 operating system and the applications) will run as before. The emulator contains models for PDP-11 CPUs, disks, tapes, and many types of serial line adapters. Ethernet controller emulation is supported on Windows 2000 Professional only.
CHARON-11 is retired and not sold any more.
The ownership of the RT-11, RSX11-M and RSTS/E operating systems is with Mentec Ltd in the UK.
CHARON-11 for Windows functional model
CHARON-11 emulates 27 PDP-11 CPUs and over 100 peripheral options developed by Digital Equipment Corporation (now HP).CHARON-11 is a professional heavy-duty product running on a Windows 2000/XP Professional host system, and is designed to replace complex PDP-11 based industrial control systems. It supports CPU Floating point options, Unibus and Qbus architectures, real time clocks and many disk and tape controllers including (T)MSCP devices.
Disk and tape drives are emulated as files on the host system or connected as physical SCSI devices. Many of the asynchronous serial line options (DHV11, DZ11 and DL11 families) and the LP11 printer port are supported. Ethernet adapter emulation is fully supported on Windows 2000 Professional host systems.
Emulated PDP-11 configurations can be archived as disk files, allowing to build libraries of 100's of virtual PDP-11systems and immediately restart them. PDP_11 applications on CHARON-11 perform much faster than on the fastest PDP-11s. On a 2 GHz Intel P4 host system, CHARON-11 provides an average performance of 15-30 times a PDP-11/94. Disk-bound operations like Sysgen are extremely fast; SYSGEN usually take minutes instead of hours (typically around 5% of the original time). RSX11-M can boot in less than one minute, saving you precious production time.
CHARON-11 directly executes binary PDP-11 instructions and does not require PDP-11 source code or a code conversion process. The emulator comes with a library of utilities to transfer files between the host system and the emulated environment.
