Stromasys boosts CHARON performance by introducing AXP+ and free Personal Alpha+

Geneva, Switzerland – November 14th, 2011 – Stromasys S.A., the leader in legacy system...

At the entry point, we are pleased to provide Personal Alpha+ for free and unlimited use by both commercial and non-commercial organizations. Personal Alpha+ is the successor to Stromasys' Personal Alpha, the first freeware virtual Alpha system, downloaded more than 10'000 times. Its popularity among enthusiasts and professionals using OpenVMS or TRU64 on their laptop or desktop remains unmatched.
Personal Alpha+ has twice the performance of Personal Alpha, and is based on the most recent commercial code base. It comes with a fixed configuration and provides the functionality of a virtual AlphaServer DS10, running on a 64-bit Windows (version 7 or server 2008) host system. Personal Alpha+ can be used for commercial purposes without restrictions; it can be downloaded from the Stromasys website. Optionally Personal Alpha+ will be covered by a support agreement.
At the high end, the Stromasys' PowerAlpha project that was started last year resulted in a spectacular high performance virtual Alpha system design. Based on the 'Bare Metal' principle, which creates software models of individual Alpha hardware components running directly on server hardware, these systems match the performance of the fastest EV68 Alpha hardware systems. The design allows (custom) hardware Alpha I/O adapters to be directly plugged in the virtual Alpha systems.
This new design principle is the basis of the new CHARON-AXP+ systems, starting with an AlphaServer DS20 model in the beginning of next year. CHARON-AXP+ systems will come as integrated hardware and software packages, pre-installed and ready to run. They provide the precise Alpha hardware environment and will run – as the other CHARON-AXP products – the original, unmodified OpenVMS or TRU64 environment and their applications.

CHARON-HPA, the world's first virtual HP3000 hardware

Geneva, Switzerland – October 26th, 2011 – Stromasys S.A., the leader in legacy system...

After multiple years of development, the CHARON-HPA/3000 virtual system executes the unmodified MPE/iX operating system, its applications and even HP3000 hardware diagnostics on an industry standard server. The CHARON-HPA/3000 virtual platform has been released in Beta test on September 7.
“The power and versatility of our CHARON virtualization architecture clearly demonstrates that users of business critical legacy HP3000 systems have now a very compelling alternative to a costly and lengthy migration” said Robert Boers, Corporate Technology Officer and Founder of Stromasys. “ The decision last August to transfer the results of our Zelus projects into product development has rapidly resulted in a new member of our CHARON virtual system architecture, proven in an installed base of over 4000 virtual VAX and Alpha licenses worldwide.”
The first CHARON-HPA/3000 product, set to launch in January 2012, is a virtual version of a HP e3000-A400 server, executing the unmodified MPE/iX operating system, database and customer applications on a standard Intel/AMD server or as a VMware client. Both an appliance and a “software only version” will be available, and commercial T&Cs will be released in December. Performance at release time will be roughly equal to the performance on HP3000-A400 hardware for commercial workload (limited floating point), when running on a recommended configuration.
With a simple re-installation of the software, not requiring code or data conversion, the longevity of MPE/iX customer application is guaranteed, without significant migration costs. For more information, go to:
.
Jean-Paul Bergmans joined Stromasys in January 2011 as Chief Operations Officer. In this role, Jean-Paul has improved Stromasys' sales channels and product positioning within the market. Stromasys sees a growing number of strategic relationships with companies like HP and Dell, driven by the compatibility of the CHARON product family with the trend towards datacenter virtualization.
“As our cross-platform virtualization technology becomes mainstream, Jean-Paul's proven track record of managing a variety of international IT companies working with large international clients will be an extraordinary asset to Stromasys” said the Stromasys founder, Chairman and CTO Robert Boers. “From a personal perspective, the transfer of my CEO role to Jean-Paul gives me the opportunity to focus on the next generation of our products and on an increasing number of strategic initiatives”.
Before joining Stromasys, Jean-Paul worked for many years in Sun Microsystems as International Marketing Development Manager, Product Sales Director EMEA, Regional Director CIS and Vice-President Southern & Eastern Europe, Middle East & Africa. After leaving Sun, Jean-Paul started and managed an IT company in Russia. Before joining Sun, Jean-Paul held positions of Marketing and Sales Manager Belgium, European Services Sales Manager and System Integration Manager Russia in Digital Equipment Corporation.
“Over the last five years, Stromasys has provided over 4000 virtual legacy systems licenses for Windows hosts to our customers”, said Robert Boers, CEO and Chairman of Stromasys. “VMS and Tru64 users have been able to move their applications to modern servers without any conversion or porting effort. With the availability of our Linux based virtualization engines, our customers now have the freedom to use the support operating system of their choice. The adaptability of Linux provides a tunable environment that is very helpful in virtual hardware design."
Successful porting of the production version of CHARON-AXP is a milestone for Stromasys, thus confirming the ability to support Stromasys products across most popular x86 software platforms. This highlights the strategic importance of Linux as it becomes the newest member of the CHARON family; by focusing on current trends we are happy to be able to provide our customers with their latest need thereby creating yet another Stromasys solution and confirming our cross-platform capabilities. Current versions of CHARON-AXP for both Windows and Linux are created from the same source; this demonstrates the efficiency and portability of Stromasys engineering competences in the cross-platform virtualization field and the ability for customers to keep their preferred platform.
Alongside the Windows version, CHARON-AXP on Linux can be installed on a VMware virtual machine. This gives us the possibility to transfer the virtual machines running on it to another VMware ESX server using vMotion.

VMware confirms: Stromasys virtual servers are “VMware READY”. IT administrators are now able to...

For media enquiries contact:
Kate Godden
CP156, Plan-les-Ouates, 1228 Geneva, Switzerland
E-mail:
Tel: +41-22-794 1070
Today, Stromasys S.A. is pleased to announce that its CHARON line of cross platform virtualisation products has received the VMware Ready logo. The software virtualises Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) PDP-11, VAX systems, and AlphaServers. VMware has now confirmed that Charon virtual servers are supported on virtual machines in the VMware ESXi environment. This “double virtualisation” offers IT administrators almost complete failure protection for their legacy systems. “With this announcement and future enhancement planned for CHARON on VMware, customers can now have a unified and standard data center infrastructure for both their main stream applications and legacy systems, a unique value proposition brought together by Stromasys and VMware“, said Robert Boers, Chairman and CEO of Stromasys.
Once the IT administrator has installed CHARON on a virtual Windows or Linux system in VMware, the virtual system can be managed with vSphere like any other virtual machine. Should there be hardware problems, even an active application together with its virtual server system can be moved to a backup VMware server using vMotion. “By using virtual servers on VMware we were able to almost completely eliminate the risk of an outage, while our application continue to run on VMS”, explains Janos Kreis, System Manager at Kraus & Naimer. Kraus & Naimer has been using CHARON for various VAX server models in conjunction with VMware for several months.
For some time now, many IT administrators have been waiting for CHARON to receive the VMware Ready logo, because large companies and government organisations are still working with OpenVMS on DEC VAX and AlphaServer systems, which were built in the 1980s and 1990s. The operating system still has the reputation to be the safest and most stable of its kind, but frequently hardware threatens to fail after more than 20 years of productive use. Together, CHARON and VMware will ensure that operating system and applications can continue to be used without any interruption.
Please refer to the
of Stromasys website for more details.
