This new version includes added functionality including support for VMware version 5.1, license management improvements, and problem fixes. It is available immediately for production use.
All materials for this release and all CHARON products can be downloaded from our Stromasys website. The following tools are accessible from our Stromasys ftp site: release notes, installation kits, user manuals, software product descriptions, and patches:

Experienced instructors will cover the complete family of CHARON-VAX and CHARON-AXP products including some performance features such as shared disk clustering. The training will cover set-up of the replacement host PC system, configuration of the CHARON environment to match the user's existing system, and migration of the user data. Partners and customers are invited to attend. This training path will run during two days, February 5th and 6th, 2013.

In addition, a parallel session will cover the CHARON-HPA family, the HP 3000 emulation products of Stromasys. This training path will run during one day, February 5th 2013.

VAX, Digital’s legendary computer, measured its performance with a unit called VUPs (VAX units per second). The fastest VAX ever built by Digital, the VAX 7000 760 reached 250 VUPs.

 

Today, CHARON-VAX has reached another remarkable milestone – exceeding 1000 VUPs (to be precise, 1050 VUPs) performance on a host system running at 4.2GHz frequency. It makes the 6 CPU CHARON-VAX/6660 PLUS product the first system in history breaking the Thousand VUPs limit for VAX systems.

 

The CHARON-VAX/66x0 family supports up to 6 CPUs, 3GB RAM, over 1000 disk and tape devices.

 

This is another example of Stromasys’ commitment to extending its product capabilities, and improving the user satisfaction and experience for all DEC hardware users with VAX and Alpha systems.

  • A separate CHARON-PDP product is being introduced. It includes PDP11-93 and PDP11-94 emulators.
  • CHARON-TB has been retired. CHARON-TB users under support can request an upgrade to either CHARON-PDP or CHARON-VAX/XM, depending on the emulation model in use.
  • CHAPI is now enabled for all CHARON-VAX/Xx and CHARON-PDP products by default.
  • The new version requires license updates.
New functionality:
  • CHARON-VAX is supported on VMware ESXi 5.0
  • CHARON-VAX supports Spartan-3 S3BASE, an FPGA adapter programmed by Stromasys to provide  CHARON-VAX access to legacy and modern physical QBUS cages
  • Additional CHARON-VAX instances and products can be added to the license key "on the fly"
  • Emulated VAX CPU performance has been improved 
  • A beta version of the CHARON Web User Interface (WebUI) is introduced. It allows one to start, stop, and manage CHARON-VAX instances through a local or remote web browser.
  • CHARON log monitor utility (logmond) is introduced for automatic execution of user defined actions triggered by CHARON license events
  • The "geometry" parameter is introduced for virtual tapes in order to manage maximum virtual tape file size
  • The TL891 device is now supported on Windows Server 2008 R2 
  • The CHARON Launcher has been updated to preserve the CHARON service configuration parameters
  • The Installation procedure does not check license and host system requirements 
  • CHARON-VAX Spare license keys are supported 
  • Using the HASP VIEW utility does not decrement time on the Backup license key (applicable to CHARON products version 4.3 and higher only) 
  • HASP VIEW utility has been updated and integrated with WebUI 
  • HASP RTL version control for the CHARON installation procedure has been implemented 
  • A valid license is not required for CHARON service management
  • Sentinel HASP drivers included in CHARON kits have been updated to version 5.95 
  • The MUX driver has been removed from CHARON installation kits
  • CHARON services and CHARON Service Manager are now removed automatically on full CHARON uninstall.
